PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce generation (exhaust) of unburnt HC in a direct injection engine. SOLUTION: An air-fuel injection valve 2 for injecting only air or air-fuel mixture into a combustion chamber 11 injects the air-fuel mixture so that the mixture is in a suitable state in ignition timing (for example, its equivalent ratio becomes approximately 1), and then is closed after the air-fuel mixture injection valve injects only air. The injected air-fuel mixture is carried around a spark plug by the air injected after the injection of the mixture. Since the air-fuel mixture in a suitable state of a definable boundary with the air is formed near the spark plug 4, little lean air-fuel mixture exists in the combustion chamber 11, and the surely stratified air-fuel mixture 12 is ignited and burnt, to largely reduce the unburnt HC.
