PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate polarization even when the diameter of an incident light beam is small, to eliminate the necessity of optimizing an optical axis according to the polarized direction of the incident light and to make handling easy. SOLUTION: The depolarization element is composed by arranging a plurality of structural bodies 12 which shows structural double refraction in a plane so that the optical axes are directed to different directions on one and the same plane by providing two kinds of media having different refractive indices alternately in a stripe at a period shorter than light wavelength on the outer surface layer part of a transparent substrate.
