PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a small component instead of a large component for protection, and to protect a circuit from a surge voltage. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device is equipped with: a switch 10 connected in series to the output of a D.C. power source E; a voltage monitoring part 11 for detecting a voltage from the power source E to a DC-DC converter 1; and a switch drive part 12. The drive part 12 turns off the switch 10 to stop supply of power from the power source E when the voltage detected by the monitoring part 11 is set higher than a predetermined voltage, and turns on the switch 10 to restart the supply of power from the power source E when the detected voltage is set lower than the predetermined voltage.
