Method for detecting and locating the position of dirt on the optics of a camera system in which the definitions of individual pixels of a camera system image are calculated. The calculated definition of each pixel is compared with a threshold valve and if the it is not exceeded, the pixel definition is monitored over a period of time. The pixel is defined as dirty if the threshold value is not exceeded for the whole time interval. Typically the time interval is defined as a sequence of 10000 images.
