PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a polyimide film improved in mechanical characteristics. SOLUTION: In this manufacturing method of a polyimide film, (1) an acetic anhydride and an organic amine compound are added in continuity or in batches to a polyamic acid solution constituted of a diamine component, a tetracarboxylic acid component and a solvent and then (2) the solution thus obtained is cast onto a support in the atmosphere wherein the density of water is 1-4,000 ppm, so as to obtain a film. (3) A cast film obtained is heated together with the support to obtain a gelled film wherein at least part of a polyamic acid is converted into a polyimide or a polyisoimide and (4) the obtained gelled film is separated from the support, cleaned as occasion demands and then subjected to simultaneous or successive biaxial orientation. (5) A biaxially oriented film thus obtained is cleaned as occasion demands, so as to remove the solvent, and then subjected to heat treatment. Thereby the biaxially oriented polyimide film is formed.
