PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recover to thermal displacement conditions same as those during machining in a short time so as to shorten idling time for re-start. SOLUTION: A method for cooling a main spindle by a coolant to suppress the thermal displacement of the main spindle 25 by the use of a cooling circuit connecting a main spindle head 16 of a machine tool having cooling jackets 42 and 44 for leading the coolant to cool the spindle 25 with a coolant feeder 45 via coolant distribution pipes 48 and 49 for circulating the coolant includes steps of stopping the main spindle for suspending the machining by replacement of stages, an exchange of a tool or the like, simultaneously stopping the circulation of the coolant, and resuming the circulation of the coolant as soon as the main spindle is restarted for resuming the machining.
