The present invention is directed to a method for recovering a precious metal from a precious metal-containing material using a leaching agent and one or more oxidants. The leaching agent is preferably thiosulfate and the oxidants one or more of chlorite (ClO2<->), chlorate (ClO3<->), bromate (BrO3<->), iodate (IO3<->), ferric oxide (Fe2O3), chromate (CrO4<2->) and manganese dioxide (MnO2). The invention is particularly suitable for in situ mining or leaching of precious metal deposits.
