The brake lining (2) may be adapted to engage on the tread of a railway wheel. It has a concave wear surface (V) and a convex rear surface (H) fitting onto a holder and application mechanism. A sensor (6) is bonded into a through bore (9) in the brake lining and wears away as the wearing surface is abraded away as the brake is used. The sensor has an electrical connection to a brake wear evaluation circuit. As the sensor wears away its electrical resistance or capacitance alters. When the thickness of the brake lining is down to a given minimum value (R) an acoustic and/or visible alarm is triggered.
