PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultraviolet ray arc tube which can be used stably for a long time without sputtering a discharge electrode and can emit ultraviolet rays with high efficiency, and which takes into consideration environmental problems and furthermore can exhibit a display object of letters and symbols or the like only when the ultraviolet rays are emitted. SOLUTION: In this ultraviolet ray arc tube, the total length of the discharge electrodes 7 which are arranged opposed to each other with a space in the discharge space 5 that is created by filling discharge gas containing ultraviolet radiation gas in a flat plate shape airtight container 4 and are covered with dielectrics 6, is set to be a length in which positive column plasma can be generated by discharge generated by applying an AC voltage. The discharge electrodes 7 have display functions for exhibiting displays of letters and symbols only at the time of ultraviolet emission.
