PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a flame retardant assistant and a flame retardant resin composition, not using an environmentally-unfriendly flame retardant, capable of reducing the proportion of the flame retardant without a loss in flame retardancy, and further, capable of improving on the natural characteristics of resins such as high flexibility and on the efficiency of kneading work. SOLUTION: The flame retardant assistant for a polyolefin resin contains at least one selected from the group consisting of composite metal compounds having Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, Fe(OH)<SB>3</SB>, Bi<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, bismuth oxide carbonate, goethite, and Bi or Fe. The flame retardant resin composition comprises the flame retardant assistant, a polyolefin resin, and at least one flame retardant selected from the group consisting of hydrated metal compounds.
