An emulsifier for use in emulsion polymerization processes is prepared by distilling a stabilized rosin under reduced pressure to leave a residue of from 3% to 20%, and reacting the overhead fraction with sodium or potassium hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate. The stabilized rosin starting material may be a disproportionated or hydrogenated resin or a mixture thereof. The distilled rosin may be mixed with an oil, e.g. a mineral oil before saponification.
