<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a bright state and a dark state to a sufficient degree with a low driving voltage without changing a liquid crystal material. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device 100 is constructed by sequentially disposing a polarizing plate 11, a liquid crystal layer 14 and a light reflection layer 15 from the front side. The liquid crystal layer 14 is able to have one retardation value with a specified high voltage applied thereto and to have the other retardation value with a specified low voltage applied thereto toward light incident from the polarizing plate 11, going through the liquid crystal layer, reflected with the light reflection layer 15, further going through the liquid crystal layer 14 and advancing to the polarizing plate 11 and brings about the bright and dark states based on the difference between the retardation values. Thickness of the liquid crystal layer and/or a pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules is made to be larger than that of the case of having one or the other retardation value. For example, the difference between a first retardation value obtained by applying a modified high voltage lower than the specified high voltage to the liquid crystal layer and a second retardation value obtained by applying a modified low voltage higher than the specified low voltage to the liquid crystal layer is made to be nearly a half of the wavelength of the light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
