PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image forming apparatus having a turnable image carrier 1 and a contact electrifying member 2 to which at least AC voltage is applied from an electrification bias applying means 3 and which electrifies the image carrier 1 to specified potential by abutting on the surface of the image carrier 1, and constituted to prolong the service life of the image carrier 1 and maintain a satisfactory image by preventing the shaving of the image carrier 1 even when the installation environment of the apparatus and the resistance of the member 2 and the image carrier 1 are changed. SOLUTION: Assuming that the peak-to-peak voltage Vpp of AC voltage generated by the electrification bias applying means 3 and angular velocityωare set to fixed positive constants, and the AC voltage applied to the contact electrifying member 2 from the applying means 3 is V when it is assumed that V1 is a positive fixed value and V2 is a negative fixed value, the AC voltage V having waveform satisfying V=(Vpp/2)×sin(ωt), when V1≤<V≤V2, V=V1 when V<V1, and V=V2 when V>V2 is applied from the means 3 to the member 2.
