<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system which maintains polarizations of two light beams within a single fiber. <P>SOLUTION: The polarization control system includes a beam source (12) that generates a first beam component containing light with a first polarization and a first frequency and a second beam component containing light with a second polarization and a second frequency. A polarization state modulator (14) adjusts the polarizations of the beam components before or after transmission on the single optical fiber (16). A detector system (70) measures polarizations of the components when outputted from the optical fiber and determines how to adjust the polarization state modulator (14) in order to give the first and second components the desired output polarization states. The beam sources is implemented using a Zeeman-split laser (12a, 12B), a laser (12C, 12D) containing a birefringent element, a pair of phase-locked lasers (602, 604), and/or a variety of configurations of electro-optic or acousto-optic crystals operated to create or enhance the frequency difference between the beam components. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
