PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manage the information concerning each ink cartridge effectively by writing the information accurately to an element provided in an ink cartridge. SOLUTION: The printer comprises a carriage which can mount/demount a plurality of cartridges each provided with an element capable of writing information, a head for ejecting ink in the cartridge mounted on the carriage, and a member for writing information to the element wherein ink consumption is measured for each cartridge and when the measured ink consumption of some cartridge reaches a threshold level, the writing member writes the information to the element provided in that cartridge. The printer can detect the fact that ink in the cartridge has reached a specified quantity and sets a specified threshold level before that fact is detected. After the fact that ink in the cartridge has reached a specified quantity is detected, the threshold level is set based on the ink consumption measured before ink in the cartridge reaches the specified quantity.
