PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a compound having not only excellent hole block ability as an organic electroluminescent element and sufficient emission luminance even under driving at a low voltage but also excellent film-forming properties in a vapor-deposited film for forming an electron transport layer or a luminescent layer and to provide the organic electroluminescent element using the compound as an electron transport material or a luminescent material. SOLUTION: 3,4-Diphenylthiophene is reacted with n-butyllithium and the resultant reaction product is then reacted with trimethoxyborane. The obtained compound is subsequently subjected to a coupling reaction with 2,6-dichloropyrazine in the presence of a base and a palladium catalyst to provide 2,6-bis(3,4-diphenylthiophen-2-yl)pyrazine. The resultant 2,6-bis(3,4-diphenylthiophen-2-yl)pyrazine is used as the electron transport material or luminescent material in the organic electroluminescent element. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
