PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an indole compound without having a substituent at the 1-, the 2- and the 3-positions of the indole ring. SOLUTION: The method for producing the compound having general formula (III) (wherein, R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>3</SB>and R<SB>4</SB>are each an H, an alkyl, an alkoxy, a dialkylamino, an alkoxycarbonyl, a carbamoyl, an alkylcarbamoyl, a dialkylcarbamoyl, a cyano, a nitro or a halogeno group) is carried out as follows. A compound having general formula (I) [wherein, R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>3</SB>and R<SB>4</SB>denote each the same meaning as described in general formula (III)] is reacted with a compound having general formula (II) (wherein, R<SB>5</SB>and R<SB>6</SB>are each an alkyl or together form a substitutable ethylene group or the like; and X is a leaving group) in a solvent such as a primary alcohol.
