PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the efficiency of a similar image retrieval by speeding up the similar image retrieval of a plurality of inquiry images and generating an index of the plurality of inquiry images. SOLUTION: In this device, when a plurality of inquiry images are inputted to a large quantity of images that are retrieval objects, a similar image is outputted for each inquiry image as a retrieval result from the retrieval object images. This device comprises a means for extracting the characteristic quantities of the inquiry images, a means for generating an index for associating the inquiry images with each other, a means for extracting the characteristic quantities of the images that are retrieval objects, a means for generating an index for associating the retrieval object images with each other, a means for retrieving images similar to the inquiry images from the retrieval object images, and a means for outputting the similar image retrieval result.
