PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the flexibility of a display element and to greatly improve the thickness reduction of the display element and the extensibility to screen upsizing, etc., by independently constituting the display element for an image and a signal processing section. SOLUTION: A phosphor is added to a core 1a of an optical fiber 1 or in a boundary portion between the core 1a and a clad 1b. In an initial state, light pulses of wavelengthsλ<SB>1</SB>andλ<SB>2</SB>are respectively made incident on the optical fiber 1 from both ends thereof in directions opposite to each other with a time lag ofΔt. The light pulse portion in the optical fiber 1 is excited to an intermediate level but the passage portion returns to a base level upon lapse of the time of≥τ. The position L<SB>c</SB>in a longitudinal direction is controllable byΔt and the fluorescence radiation in the arbitrary position at the side face of the optical fiber can be realized.
