<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the recording and reproducing quality constant, in a device allowed to use both a coated tape and a deposited tape. <P>SOLUTION: This device is provided with a magnetic tape discriminating means for discriminating the kind of the mounted magnetic tape, a magnetic tape driving means for making to run the magnetic tape and a control means for controlling the run speed of the magnetic tape by the discrimination result of the magnetic tape discriminating means.
