PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium capable of suppressing the reduction of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and reducing the noise. SOLUTION: In the perpendicular magnetic recording medium 100 wherein a ferromagnetic metal thin film 103 obtained by alternately laminating cobalt films and palladium films in this order is formed on a palladium base layer 102 formed on a non-magnetic substrate 101, the ferromagnetic metal thin film 103 has 15 to 30 nm film thickness, the ratio d<SB>Co</SB>/d<SB>Pd</SB>of the film thickness d<SB>Co</SB>of the cobalt film contained in the ferromagnetic metal thin film 103 to the film thickness d<SB>Pd</SB>of the palladium film contained in the ferromagnetic metal thin film 103 is specified to be 0.25 to 0.43, magnetic particles which constitute the cobalt film have≤60 nm particle size and the palladium base layer has≥20 nm film thickness.
