PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium capable of suppressing the reduction of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and reducing the noise. SOLUTION: In the perpendicular magnetic recording medium 100 wherein a ferromagnetic metal thin film 103 obtained by alternately laminating cobalt films and palladium films in this order is formed on a palladium base layer 102 formed on a non-magnetic substrate 101, the ferromagnetic metal thin film 103 has 15 to 30 nm film thickness, the ratio dCo/dPdof the film thickness dCoof the cobalt film contained in the ferromagnetic metal thin film 103 to the film thickness dPdof the palladium film contained in the ferromagnetic metal thin film 103 is specified to be 0.25 to 0.43, magnetic particles which constitute the cobalt film have≤60 nm particle size and the palladium base layer has≥20 nm film thickness.
