PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pigment having various different mass color tones by combining vision-dependant interference phenomena with absorption colors to expand the range of pearlescent pigments. SOLUTION: This new pigment is based on a substrate coated with at least one of a selected light-absorbing layer consisting of a fluoride, an oxyfluoride, a fluorosulfide and/or an oxyfluorosulfide. The pigment is obtained by covering a metal oxide or a mixed metal oxides on e.g. a mica of a thin leaf state, transferring the obtained precursor into preferably a fluidized bed reactor and calcinating under the flow of fluorinating or sulfurizing gas for converting the oxide into the fluoride, oxifluoride, fluorosulfide and/or oxyfluorosulfide.
