The nonwoven carrier material has a coating (1) on the visible side as a plastics dispersion which hardens. The coating is laid on a barrier underlay e.g. of paper (2) with a structured surface (3) with a leather grain appearance, to be bonded to the carrier material by a bonding layer. The coating has the same thickness at the peaks (6) and valleys of the grain structure, and with capillaries through its thickness. A single thin bonding layer holds it at the carrier material. The coating is heated, and shrinks as the water evaporates to form a film surface (5) over the grain structure.
