PURPOSE: An apparatus for processing an image signal and a method for displaying an image signal are provided to maintain the visual luminance of the non-image area uniform independent of the affect of the peak luminance enhancement(PLE). CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for processing an image signal includes a display device, an image signal generation unit, a synthesizing unit(15), a display luminance level setting unit, a display driving unit, an average luminance level detection unit and a non-image luminance level setting unit. The synthesizing unit generates the synthesized image signal to synthesize the image signal for the non-image area with the input image signal. The display luminance level setting unit sets the display luminance level based on the average luminance level of the synthesized image signal. The display driving unit drives the display device. The average luminance level detection unit detects the average luminance level of the input image signal. And, the non-image luminance level setting unit sets the luminance level of the image signal for the non-image area. |
