The changer has a main tray (2) withdrawn from a device frame, and a disc set in subtrays when the tray is retreated and accommodated in the frame. Discs in a disc waiting position are transported to a disc reproduction position behind a waiting position together with respective subtrays and loaded on a turntable of a traverse unit. Gear cams and ribs are combined with respective sensors. An independent claim is also included for a method of detecting a mode of a disc changer capable of selecting a disc set on a desired subtray among a set of subtrays and recording and reproducing a disc.
