The machine has a stator (26) comprising stator windings (32) within a stationary magnetic core (28). The stator windings are electrically coupled to form an electrical circuit. A rotor (12) has a set of salient pole pieces (22) coupled to a shaft, where each pole piece generates a rotating magnetic field. A stationary superconducting field coil (40) circumscribing the shaft generates the magnetic field in each piece.
