A test card (16) is inserted in an electronic device which generates a signal of known frequency. The card has a non-porous substrate on which a reagent is initially immobilized and on which a sample is received. Electrodes (22) pass the generated signal into the sample to generate a further signal corresponding to the viscosity of the sample which correlates to the curve of a coagulation/lysis assay. A detection area (20) is configured to retain the sample in contact with electrodes (22). Optionally, the test card has a further electrode pair (36) to detect the presence and movement of the sample liquid. Readings may begin immediately the sample contacts the electrodes (36) or after a time delay. A processor (32) controls the entire operation of the instrument including turning it on in response to insertion of a test card (16), providing electrical power and timing signals, controlling any time delays, determining when the assay has stabilized, receiving information from a temperature sensor, and receiving input from measuring the electrical properties of the sample and converting it to output, based on calibration information, to the display. The processor also determines if the coagulation or lysis has occurred in the specified time, to a specified endpoint or within a specified reaction rate to control for inactive reagents. The sample is warmed by a heater (18) to a predetermined temperature. The digital output is displayed externally to the housing (12).</p> |
