Enhanced optical pumping of materials exhibiting polarization-dependent absorption

The oscillator has a laser head with a gain medium exhibiting polarization-dependent absorption. A pump source produces a pump beam for which the mediums absorption is equal on both polarizations along its axes. The source produces the beam for which the ratio between the absorption coefficients on the polarizations is 50 percentage or less of that at the mediums common pump wavelengths close to absorption peaks. An independent claim is also included for a method of pumping laser materials having polarization-dependent absorption.
