A fuel cell stack comprising at least one membrane electrode assembly (1) and a fuel inlet is disclosed. The fuel cell stack further comprises a catalyst that can promote the water gas shift reaction at a temperature in the range from ambient to 150<SUP>°</SUP>C, and the catalyst is located such that fuel supplied at the fuel inlet will contact the catalyst before reaching the anode electrocatalyst layer (4). The amount of carbon monoxide in the fuel is reduced by the WGS reaction, preventing poisoning of the anode electrocatalyst layer. |
