Aligned objects are transported in the cross-direction on a conveyor (2) formed by parallel chains, belts or the like which drive the objects via follower wheels (7). Accelerating some of the objects in the transport direction towards the rear side of the previous follower wheel enables new wheels to be introduced between the original wheels, ensuring that the objects remain spaced apart in the cross-direction before being transported again in the length direction using two roller conveyors (9, 10).
