POPULATION PROFILING MATERIALS AND METHODS

A method of characterizing and identifying microorganisms within a diverse community of microorganisms is disclosed. The method includes amplifying variable regions of a DNA region of interest, such as the cpn60 gene or 16s r RNA of samples taken fro m a microbial community. Primers designed from the analysis of phylogenetic comparisons of nucleotide sequences of the variable regions of the cpn60 gene are also disclosed.
