The detector (1) has a cylindrical shape application block (2) regrouping an infrared type LED (3) and a photoreceptor (4). The detector detects presence/absence of blood flow in the blood vessels and heart or the pulsations of the heart for confirming or nullifying a cardio-vascular arrest state. An active surface (7) of the photoreceptor is protected from direct light of the LED by a circular flange (8). An independent claim is also included for a method of detecting pulsations of a heart or blood vessel.
