<p>A lubricant seal assembly (10) has an outer seal component (18) and a separate inner wear sleeve (36). The outer seal component (18) has a carrier (20) and a PTFE seal element (30) which lays down against the wear sleeve (36) to provide a seal collar extending to an oil side of the seal assembly (10). The wear sleeve (36) is formed on an air side of the assembly (10) with an end flange (34), but is free of any such flanges on the oil side. The end flange (34) has an axial portion (38) extending into the seal component (66) to define a labyrinth debris exclusion path. One or more elastomeric debris exclusion lips (54, 56) are formed on the carrier (20) and are precisely positioned relative to the wear sleeve (36) with the aid of an installation tool (92) that engages end faces of the seal component (66) and wear sleeve (36) to press them into precise axial alignment relative to one another in repeatable fashion (Fig.3).</p> |
