The method involves generating an authentication code (C) using a code generator (5), and applying the code (C) to an illuminator (2). A circuit extracts pulsed luminance code (C) from a video signal that is received from a camera (1). A logical comparator (8) compares the authentication and luminance codes, and generates a signal to activate an alarm, when the codes are different. The illuminator (2) controlled by the authentication code (C) transmits the pulsed luminance code (C) in certain points of an image that is captured by the camera (1). An independent claim is also included for an image authentication device.
