PURPOSE: A mobile terminal for transmitting a message by selecting a message transmission mode and a method thereof, particularly for calculating message transmission charges of each message transmission mode and transmitting a message in a message transmission mode corresponding to the lowest charge, are provided to allow a user to be accurately informed a message transmission charge of his/her created message. CONSTITUTION: A key input unit(8) outputs key input data corresponding to creation of a message and a request for transmitting the created message by a user. A buffer(12) temporarily stores the created message. A memory unit(14) stores charge information according to message transmission modes and message transmission mode select setting information. A controller(2) controls to detect message transmission modes, calculate message transmission charges of each message transmission mode, transmit the created message in a message transmission mode corresponding to an optimized charge if the message transmission mode is set to be automatically selected, or display the calculated message transmission charges and transmit the created message in a message transmission mode selected by the user if the message transmission mode is set to be selected by the user. A display unit(10) displays message transmission charges according to each message transmission mode.
