An outboardmotor or engine 1 includes a forward/backward selector provided with a selector mechanism 13 including a clutch mechanism 15 for selecting either a forward-drive mode or a backward-drive mode, and a selector-operating rod 40 for operating the clutch mechanism 15. The selector-operating rod 40 is formed by connecting an upper rod 41 and a lower rod 42. The lower rod 42 has an upper portion 50 capable of being detachably connected to the upper rod 41, and a middle portion 70 having an upper end joined to the upper portion 50. The lower rod 42 is inserted slidably in a gear case 11 in a liquid-tight fashion such that the middle portion 70 is entirely contained in a sealed space 11c formed in the gear case 11, and a connecting end 51 of the upper portion 50 extends outside the gear case 11. The upper portion 50 exposed to water and the middle portion 70 not exposed to water, of the lower rod 42, are formed of different materials, so that the cost of the outboard engine 1 can be reduced.
