A procedure for processing a starting-point image representing an object, such as a human heart, involves removing small structures from the starting-point image, while large structures are preserved, subtracting the image of the large structures from the starting-point image, to obtain a subtracted image which represents the small structures. The image of the large structures is then processed by using a table through which the structures with low gray scales are removed and structures with intermediate gray scales are preserved, followed by multiplying the image with intermediate gray scales with the subtracted image which represents the small structures so as to obtain an end-point (output) image that represents the small structures present in the background with intermediate gray scales.
