PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make accurately readable images by preventing a document from floating in an image reader having an ADF (auto document feeder) for carrying the document by means of an endless carrying belt. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes: at least one pressing means for pressing the carrying belt onto original platen glass; and a moving means for moving the pressing means in the subscanning direction, in the case of fixed reading, the pressing means is also moved attended with the scanning of an optical scanning means and the pressing means is stopped on a read position in the case of a skimming-through reading so that the pressing means presses the carrying belt onto the document platen glass at its reading position at all times.
