An illuminating device comprising a light source (16) and a surface light guide plate (18). The surface light guide plate (18) has opposing front surfaces, side surfaces and end surfaces, and is provided at one end surface (23) thereof with a plurality of prisms (28). The plurality of prisms (28) have a function of a linear light guide plate to provide an integrated surface light guide plate. The plurality of prisms (28) are shaped to vary according to their positions, and the light source (16) is disposed so that light enters at a position, close to an end surface, on a side surface. One of the opposing front surfaces has a means (26) for allowing light propagating through the inside of the surface light guide plate to go out of one of the opposing front surfaces. In addition, slits (30, 32) or grooves (34) are provided in the side surface or the rear surface of the surface light guide plate. A liquid crystal display unit includes such an illuminating device.
