A dishwasher having an operating course suitable for using a dedicated low-foaming detergent and an operating course suitable for using a high-foaming kitchen detergent. In the kitchen detergent course, as a washing step for washing dishes, a first spray washing in which detergent water with detergent dissolved therein is sprayed over the dishes for a short time and the spray is stopped for a moment is preliminarily performed while discriminating the degree of foaming in a washing chamber with an optical sensor installed in a dry air passage, and when the foaming is determined to be large, a detergent water draining time is increased. After the detergent water in the washing chamber is discharged for the draining time, city water is fed to a specified level to control the concentration of the detergent water, and a second spray washing is performed as a washing. When the foaming is large in the first spray washing, the detergent water is thinned accordingly, and the foaming can be prevented from becoming abnormally large in the second spray washing. By using an inexpensive and easily available kitchen detergent, excellent dish washing can be achieved while preventing foam from flowing over to the outside of the dishwasher.
