The limiting device (10) comprises a drive motor (12), with a velocity sensor (18) determining the actual velocity of the motor vehicle. An adjusting mechanism (12a) is provided to increase or reduce the efficiency of the drive motor (12). A controller (20) limits the actual velocity to a maximum value which corresponds to the maximum velocity by adjusting the adjusting mechanism (12a). A switching mechanism (22) is provided to switch the limit of the maximum velocity on or off. The actual velocity is freely variable in the velocity range below the predetermined maximum velocity.
