PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an expandable resin composition composed of a synthetic resin, a specific layered titanic acid and a foaming agent, and exhibiting good strength and particularly having high impact resistance and to obtain foam by expanding the expandable resin composition. SOLUTION: The expandable resin composition is composed of (1) 100 pts.wt. synthetic resin, (2) 0.5-100 pts.wt. layered titanic acid obtained by treating a layered titanic acid salt represented by general formula A<SB>x</SB>M<SB>y</SB>N<SB>z</SB>Ti<SB>2-(y+z)</SB>O<SB>4</SB>[wherein A and M are each mutually different mono to trivalent metal; N represents a defect part of Ti; x is 0 or a positive real number satisfying the formula 0<x<1.0; y and z are each 0 or a positive real number satisfying the formula 0<y+z<1] with an acid or a warm water and substituting 40-99% of A and/or M ion with hydrogen and/or a hydronium ion and successively making a basic compound having interlaminar swelling action to act on the treated titanic acid salt and swelling or releasing the interlayer of the titanic acid salt and (3) 0.05-30 pts.wt. foaming agent.
