<p>The vehicle driver has a smart card [5] having identification data stored in memory and a transmitter/receiver [17] that communicates with an in vehicle door and function control unit [4]. Signal levels are measured [19] and processed [18]. When the smart card is in range the vehicle system is activated. When out of range the doors are locked and functions disabled.</p>
