Device for monitoring the oil level (1) in a refrigeration compressor (2) comprises at least one sensor (3) and an evaluation device (4). The sensor is arranged in the oil and emits a signal depending on the temperature. Elements (6) are provided for heating the sensor. The evaluation device monitors the heating and/or cooling of the sensor by evaluating the sensor signal. An independent claim is also included for a refrigeration compressor comprising the above monitoring device. Preferred Features: The sensor is formed by a temperature-sensitive resistor, a linear/approximately linear sensor, or by a PTC thermistor.
