PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically and efficiently manufacture a consolidated woody material wherein a consolidated layer is provided on one side surface of a woody material. SOLUTION: Woody materials W1, of which the water content is adjusted to a fiber saturation point or below, are arranged on both surfaces of a flat plate 21 to be arranged between hot plates 11 and 13 along with the flat plate 21 to be arranged between hot plates 11 and 13 along with the flat plate 21 and heated/compressed by the hot plates 11 and 13 to form the consolidated layers on the side surfaces of the woody materials. Spacers 31, 33 and 35 for defining the compression quantity of the woody materials due to the hot plates 11 and 13 are interposed between the hot plates 11 and 13 while caul plates 23 and 25 are arranged on the surfaces on the sides of the hot plates of the woody materials and the heating/compression due to the hot plates is preferably performed at a temperature lower than the softening point of cellulose being the crystal component of the woody material but higher than the softening point of the amorphous component of the woody material.
