PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has improved electromagnetic conversion characteristics and is suitable for an MR head in particular. SOLUTION: In this magnetic recording medium provided with a magnetic layer including ferromagnetic powder on a support, the magnetic layer has a magnetization reversal volume of 3,000 to 15,000 nm<SP>3</SP>, a thickness of 0.01 to 0.15μm, a perpendicular squareness ratio of≥0.7, and a surface electric resistance Rs of≤10<SP>8</SP>Ω/sq.
