PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device which has high intensity and, moreover, has high reliability and image quality. SOLUTION: A cooling apparatus 30 is set in such a manner that cooling liquid 31 is sent from a cooling liquid injection port 38a to a cooling unit 38 by a cooling liquid circulation pump 36, cools a reflection type space light modulator 20, thereafter, is discharged from a cooling liquid discharge port 38b and is circulated. A temperature sensor 34 is disposed behind the cooling liquid discharge port 38b, detects the temperature of the cooling liquid after cooling the reflection type space light modulator 20, controls a valve 35 so that the reflection type space light modulator 20 is retained at a prescribed operation temperature and controls the flow rate of the cooling liquid 31.
