PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable forming of an air-fuel mixture layer of constantly appropriate combustible concentration even when an operating condition is changed at stratified charge combustion. SOLUTION: In this direct injection type spark ignition engine, a fuel injection valve 11 and a spark plug 12 are provided at an upper part of a cylinder, and a cavity 23 for receiving a fuel spray from the fuel injection valve is formed at a piston crown surface. The cavity 23 is set such that the cavity has an inner wall surface 25 inclined to have an opening 26 more enlarged than a bottom surface 24, the fuel spray injected from the fuel injection valve 11 at a piston compression stroke constantly collides with the inner surface 25, and an angle when the fuel collides with the inner surface 25 takes the form of an acute angle with an outside of the cavity 23, whereby the fuel spray forms a circulating flow facing an inside of the cavity.
