PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head capable of suppressing side erase to the utmost and securing the stable recording performance. SOLUTION: A TH specifying part 15 which forms part of the return yoke layers arranged on the trailing side of the magnetic pole layer 20 is constituted of a central part 15A correspondingly positioned to the tip part 10A of the main magnetic pole layers 10 and two side parts 15BR, 15BL connected to both width directional sides of this central part 15A, and is structured so that the rear end edges of these two side parts 15BR, 15BL are positioned toward the rearward of the rear end edges of the central part 15A. The two side parts 15BR and 15BL are made close to the rear end part 10B of the main magnetic pole layers 10 and the surplus magnetic flux concentrated on the rear end part 10B is made to easily flow into the TH specifying part 15.
