The method involves detecting a period of inactivity in the internet protocol (IP) connection and sending keep-alive messages at predetermined intervals. The length of several periods of inactivity at which the mobile radio network disconnects the IP connection are monitored. A maximum interval (TINT) between the keep-alive messages is determined, based on the monitored lengths, such that the maximum time interval meets a predetermined criterion of statistical confidence.
